Verteidigung
Update:
Am Montag (26.04) wurde mir mitgeteilt, dass die Verteidigung meiner Doktorarbeit als sogenannte 1,5 Meter Verteidigung stattfinden kann (und wird). Dies bedeutet, dass die Verteidigung als Präsensveranstaltung stattfindet, wobei das halbe Komitee anwesend sein wird und die andere Hälfte per Zoom zugeschaltet wird. Darüber hinaus ist eine beschränkte Anzahl von 15 Gästen zugelassen.
Ich warte zurzeit noch auf mehr Informationen von der Universität bezüglich des Ablaufs. Der Live-Stream sollte aber weiterhin verfügbar sein.

Die Verteidigung meiner Dissertation Flexure mechanisms for upper-limb support findet gemäß des ursprünglichen Plans am Freitag 30. April 2021 um 16:45 Uhr, im Prof. dr. G. Berkhoff-Zaal im Gebäude Waaier der Universität Twente statt. Zuvor wird es eine kurze Präsentation geben, die bereits um 16:30 Uhr beginnt.

Aufgrund der aktuellen Situation ist jedoch stark davon auszugehen, dass die Verteidigung nicht im üblichen Rahmen einer öffentlich zugängigen Zeremonie stattfinden wird. Aktuell werden Verteidigungen ausschließlich digital per Videokonferenz durchgeführt. Sollte sich die Lage signifikant verbessern, wäre eine Verteidigung unter dem sogenannten ‘1,5 Meter Protokoll’ denkbar. Dies bedeutet, dass die Verteidigung unter Einhaltung von Hygienerichtlinen als Präsensveranstaltung stattfinden kann, wobei eine beschränkte Anzahl von 15 Gästen mit Voranmeldung zugelassen wäre.

Update:
On Monday (26/04) it was decided that my doctoral defense can (and will) be held as a 1,5 meter defense. This means that the defense will be held in-person, with half of the committee present and half of the committee joining via Zoom. Also, a limited number of 15 guests will be allowed.
I am still waiting for more details from the University regarding the procedures. The live stream should still be available.

The defense of my dissertation Flexure mechanisms for upper-limb support is formally scheduled to take place on April 30th 2021 at 16:45 in the Prof. dr. G. Berkhoff-Zaal in the building Waaier of the University of Twente. Prior to the defense there will be a short presentation at 16:30.

But due to the current situation it is not likely that the defense will take place as a public in-person ceremony. Currently defenses are exclusively conducted online via video conference. Should the situation improve a defense following the ‘1.5 meter protocol’ may become possible. This means that following safety guidelines a in-person ceremony can be conducted, and a limited number of 15 guest will be admitted, given they have been registered in advance.
However, the situation is constantly changing and a final decision about the manner in which the defense will take place is (at least according to current procedures) communicated to me on the Monday prior to the defense. Yet, what already seems clear is that a subsequent party will not be possible – neither on the Dutch nor on the German side of the border. Therefore, I currently don’t feel comfortable sending out any invites, Should the situation change, then I will communicate this here.

Dissertation
I am in the process of finalizing my dissertation entitled Flexure mechanisms for upper-limb support – Towards compliant wearable assistive devices.
The draft manuscript is currently being reviewed by the members of the graduation committee. The final version is expected to be ready around mid of April.
